Nineteen years after season one of The Bachelor premiered, there may finally be a season starring a gay bachelor.
On April 14, former Bachelor star Colton Underwood came out as gay on Good Morning America. In the wake of this news, TMZ reported that “a number of producers were moved by Colton’s revelation, and they’ve informally talked over the last few days amongst themselves about a gay ‘Bachelor’ season.”

“I’ve ran from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time,” Underwood told Good Morning America. “And I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”
Underwood starred in season 23 of The Bachelor – he was the man that thirty young women competed for. He was branded “the virgin bachelor” during his season because he was open about being a virgin.
On March 12, 2019, he chose Cassie Randolph as the winner of season 23, without proposing to her. They dated for a year before announcing their break-up in May 2020, saying, “Sometimes people are just meant to be friends.”
Underwood’s coming out is causing fans to excitedly proclaim it is time for a gay Bachelor, and now it appears the producers agree.
Whether this alleged season should specifically star Underwood or a different gay man seems to be up for debate among fans in the Twittersphere.
While some remain steadfastly on team Colton, others believe someone new is crucial, in part due to what happened between Underwood and Cassie Randolph after their relationship ended.
Months after their break up, Randolph requested a restraining order against Underwood, alleging he stalked her, sent her “unsettling” text messages, and put a tracking device on her car. She later said that they resolved their issues privately and asked the police to drop the investigation.

In an essay for The Guardian journalist Harron Walker wrote that the first gay season of The Bachelor should be “honest and messy in a way that felt authentic to queer dating and hooking up with little concern for what straight viewers might think.”
This would mean, for example, allowing contestants to explore relationships with one another and not only the Bachelor himself, though Walker acknowledged it is unlikely the show would embrace this format.
Right now, everything is speculation. Only time will tell where the show goes.
