The former president of the D.C. chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans has left the organization over its decision to endorse President Donald Trump, in spite of his anti-LGBTQ record, calling it a “step too far.”
“It saddens me greatly to say that today, I am ending my association with Log Cabin Republicans, an organization I’ve been heavily involved with for the last decade–including serving as president of the D.C. chapter for three years,” Robert Turner wrote in a Facebook post, the Washington Blade reports.
“There are many great people still involved with the organization and I hope they press on,” he added.
Turner also complimented Jerri Ann Henry, who heads up the national group, saying he felt she was unable to “get anything accomplished because of a board of directors who won’t get out of her way.”
Notably, the op-ed in The Washington Post announcing the endorsement was authored by Robert Kabel, the group’s chairman, and Jill Homan, its vice chairwoman, with Henry’s name unattached.
The article gave Trump credit for announcing a plan to end new HIV transmissions by 2030, despite making cuts to HIV/AIDS programs and his administration’s shutting down of promising research due to its use of fetal tissue. The group also praised his administration’s stated plan to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide, despite the president appearing to know nothing about it when asked.
