GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz’s “Transgender Potato Head” Joke Flops At CPAC

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) used his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, on Friday to take several swipes – both at members of his own party and at Democrats.

Gaetz, a top ally of former President Donald Trump, opened his remarks with a dig at Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), whom Gaetz unsuccessfully tried to get removed from the House GOP leadership after she supported Trump’s second impeachment for inciting the deadly January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans to support the impeachment article and survived an attempt by House conservatives to oust her from her number three leadership position.

“Many Fortune 100 companies will not donate to pro-Trump Republicans,” Gaetz later complained to the crowd. “Some have even pulled their sponsorships of this conference. American business should be worried about business, not wokeism.”

He then complained about the so-called “cancel culture” wars.

“Look out, Mr. Potato Head, you’re next. “I’m sorry, I think now he’s going by Potato-x. Can’t be Mr. Potato Head — see to me, the whole concept of the Mr. Potato Head was you could move the parts around, I mean, Mr. Potato Head was America’s first transgender doll and even he got canceled,” Gaetz said to a smattering of polite applause and muted laughter.
