A Kansas police officer resigned in disgrace on Monday after falsely accusing McDonald’s workers of writing “fu-king pig” on his coffee cup after writing it himself, officials said.
Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday had shared a photo of the cup in an angry Facebook post on Saturday that accused McDonald’s employees of handing one of his officers the cup containing the offensive message before his shift, NBC affiliate KSNT of Topeka reported.
The McDonald’s in Junction City, about 25 miles north of Herington near Fort Riley Army Base, said Sunday that after reviewing surveillance video, representatives were confident that no employee wrote the message.
“My McDonald’s have the utmost respect for all members of law enforcement and the military and were troubled by the accusation made,” Dana Cook, the owner of the franchise, said in a statement. “We thoroughly reviewed our security video from every angle, which clearly shows the words were not written by one of our employees. We look forward to working with Chief Hornaday as he continues his investigation.”
After further investigation, the police department discovered that the unidentified Herington officer fabricated the story.
“This was completely and solely fabricated by a Herington police officer who is no longer employed by our agency,” Hornaday said at a news conference Monday, telling reporters the 23-year-old officer, who is a former military police officer in the Army, resigned after he “confessed” to staging the incident.
“I truly hope the former officer of the Herington Police Department that did this understands the magnitude of the black eye this gives the law enforcement profession from coast to coast,” Hornaday said.
“We can see how something so serious can get so out of control very, very quickly,” he said.
Earlier Monday, Hornaday deleted his original Facebook post, which revealed the store’s address.
Hornaday’s Facebook post and subsequent national headlines prompted threats to the McDonald’s store.
