One person was killed and another injured when a pickup truck plowed into a group of people at the start of the Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival on Saturday night in Wilton Manors, according to the mayor of Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis was at the event and said he witnessed the incident which happened just as the parade was getting started around 7 p.m. Saturday night.
He described it as an attack on the LGBTQ community.
Police said it happened at the corner of Northeast 15th Street and Northeast Fourth Avenue.
One of the victims has died, said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, who was at the parade.
Local 10 News reporter Christian De La Rosa said he saw a white pickup truck lined up with other floats when it hit the gas and ran over two men standing by to take part in the parade on Wilton Drive.

Police took the man who was driving the truck into custody. It is not clear if the crash was intentional.
Witnesses say the man in custody was telling police it was an accident.
“First responders rushed in to help the victims, who were taken to Broward Health Medical Center. The other victim is in critical condition, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said. Their names have not yet been released,” reports WPLG. “Trantalis said a third person was injured but in stable condition. Video obtained by Local 10 News shows a man being checked by fire rescue officials and telling people in the crowd that he was OK.”
Video at the scene showed U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in tears while sitting in a convertible at the parade. The truck narrowly missed hitting Rep. Schultz, according to multiple reports.
Wilton Manors police said the parade has been canceled because of “a tragic event.” Police said the public is not in danger.
Due to a tragic event, the Stonewall Pride Parade has been cancelled but the festival events will continue.
