History was made at Sunday’s Full Queer event as out pro wrestler Da Shade became the inaugural Princex of Pride champion. The tournament to crown the first champion headlined the event, with eight of the West Coast’s most vibrant LGBTQ pro wrestlers attempting to stake their claim at the rainbow-laden gold.
The field thinned after Mariah Moreno, Great Bambina, Jet Jameson and J.M.M. fell in opening round contests, setting the stage for a four-way elimination final between Da Shade, Abigail Warren, Keita Murray and Brittany Wonder.
In the end, it came down to a one-on-one battle between Da Shade and Keita. After thwarting some deviousness from Keita, Da Shade reversed a hurricanrana into a modified Emerald Flowsion slam, which Da Shade dubs the “Shade Tree,” to score the final pinfall of the afternoon.
A visibly emotional Da Shade soaked it all in as Full Queer organizers “Marcomania” Marco Rodriguez, D-Rogue and Juicy Finau secured the Princex of Pride championship around his waist.
“It’s an absolute honor to be the first ever!!! I’ve always wanted to make history,” Da Shade told Outsports following his victory. “I’ve done it and I’m not done yet. I still feel like I’m on a cloud. The people that came to help make this show happen are fantastic people in the industry and the world.”
The Princex of Pride championship is one of two pro wrestling titles created this year to highlight the widespread LGBTQ pro wrestling community. Butch vs. Gore’s Billy Dixon announced on the Outsports podcast LGBT In The Ring that the production house will crown its first Openweight Freedom Wrestling World champion at Butch vs. Gore’s Chicago debut on October 2.
Da Shade is no stranger to championship gold in the pro wrestling world, and is already excited to defend his title. “I welcome any and all challengers for this title anywhere in the world,” Da Shade said.
It’s a good attitude to have considering his first challenger for the Princex of Pride title is already known. Out pro wrestler Sandra Moone won the Harvey Milk Scramble match earlier in the afternoon, positioning her as Da Shade’s first opponent.
“I want to elevate this title and all contenders,” Da Shade said, “Including Sandra Moone.”
