Sanders to Request Partial Recanvass in Iowa After Buttigieg Declared Winner

It has been one full week after Iowans turned out to caucus for their Democratic primary candidate of choice and the story is still unfolding.

The Iowa Democratic Party released results Sunday showing former Mayor Pete Buttigieg picked up 14 national delegates to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 12. Sen. Elizabeth Warren picked up eight, former Vice President Joe Biden got six, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar gained one, according to their numbers.

However, due to errors in the results, which appear to be the result of incompetence not intentional tampering, news outlets, including The New York Times and the Associated Press, have said determining a winner is still not possible.

Both Buttigieg and Sanders have declared themselves victorious.

The deadline for calling for a recanvass, which is not a recount but rather a recalculation of election results to determine that they were reported accurately, is today, Monday, at noon.

While Sanders won the popular vote, with about 6,000 more caucus-goers pledging their support for him upon first alignment, Buttigieg gained more state delegate equivalents and more national delegates, according to the Iowa Democratic Party.

A Sanders aide told the AP the campaign will ask the state party to review the results from 20 to 30 precincts.

Sanders’ campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, said during an interview with CNN that they expect the national delegate total to be even between the two top candidates after the partial recanvass.

Voters in New Hampshire will have their say on Tuesday, with polls showing Buttigieg gaining on Sanders. Meanwhile, Warren, Biden, and Klobuchar hope to outperform expectations, with all of them needing a strong showing to keep their candidacies afloat and to dispel the idea that this race is beginning to come down to a neck-and-neck fight between Buttigieg and Sanders for the party’s nomination.
