So Long, Salem: Gay Couple Will and Sonny Depart “Days of Our Lives”

Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis are saying goodbye to Salem.

Freddie Smith and Chandler Massey, who play the Days of Our Lives gay power couple, have been let go from their contracts on the long-running daytime soap.

Smith broke the news February 12 in a video he posted to his Twitter, announcing that they will “not be filming any more episodes after this week.” He also noted that Days shoots episodes six months in advance, so fans will see the last of Will and Sonny (or WilSon as fans lovingly call them) on September 18, 2020.

“It was not our choice. We were looking forward to keeping this storyline going,” Smith said in the video. “I understand there’s a lot going on with Days of Our Lives,” he continued, referring to the soap’s uncertain future, but Days was recently renewed for a 56th season.

Will and Sonny may be Salem’s most popular gay couple, but their on-again, off-again romance has been full of drama for years. Massey, who played Will from 2010 to 2014, returned to the series in 2017 to reprise his character—even though Will had been killed off three years prior.

In September 2017 Will’s former husband Sonny was about to marry Paul (Christopher Sean) when the wedding was interrupted with news of Will still being alive. Viewers got their first glimpse of Will’s return when he appeared in a hallucination to his alcoholic father, Lucas (Bryan Dattilo). Will also got back into bed with Sonny in Sonny’s dream the night before his wedding to Paul.

It was revealed that Will had lost his memory but was eventually reunited with his mother and taken back to Salem. Will tried to jog his memory by visiting people from his past—including Paul, with whom he cheated on Sonny, and who was now marrying Sonny himself. You following?

Eventually, Paul and Will became Salem’s newest power couple. But while preparing for his grandmother’s wedding, all of Will’s memories came back to him, including his wedding to Sonny. He and Sonny then shared a passionate kiss, and they rekindled their romance. And that’s not even the half of it.

“Your support is what allowed us to tell this love story,” Smith said in his video announcement. “Your support allowed us to go down in history as one of the power couples on Days of Our Lives, which is already a historical show. I can’t thank you enough.”

Massey also commented on his Days departure, tweeting that he is “forever grateful to everyone who went on this journey with us.”

Smith noted that Massey will join him this week on his podcast, The Freddie and Alyssa Show, to talk about what went down on Days.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
