The Category Is: Billy Porter, Emmy Winner

Every week on Pose, Billy Porter’s character hands out trophies—but now the actor finally gets to take one home himself.

During tonight’s 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Porter became the first openly gay black man to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

“The category is love, y’all! Love!” Porter yelled to the audience as his Pose co-stars stood with tears in their eyes. Porter continued by quoting James Baldwin: “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.” He went on to thank a long list of people, including his husband and Pose co-creator Ryan Murphy.

Porter won for his portrayal of HIV-positive emcee Pray Tell on the FX series, which focuses on gay and trans performers in New York City’s 1980s and 1990s ballroom scene.

“There was no context for this,” Porter said in July about his historic nomination. “The sky is the limit now, honey!”

Pose was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series but lost to Game of Thrones. Porter was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year but lost to Bodyguard’s Richard Madden.

Pose has been renewed for a third season and is expected to return next summer.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
