Seven years, eight Emmy nominations, and four seasons later, the Eastsiders journey has come to an end… for now.
The final season premiered on Netflix back in December, but Wolfe Video has released a new documentary that takes you behind the scenes of the beloved series.
Series creator and doc director Kit Williamson spoke with NewNowNext about his wild Eastsiders ride, and whether he would ever return to the world of Cal and Thom.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice before you started filming Eastsiders, what would it be?
Buckle up, because it’s going to be a wild ride! When we started Eastsiders on YouTube we had no idea what to expect, and I still can’t believe the journey the show has gone on, from YouTube to Netflix, subtitled in over 30 languages.
What surprised you the most about this whole journey?
The best surprise in all of this has been how invested the fans have gotten in the show. We’ve crowdfunded all four seasons and raised nearly half a million dollars through the years through crowdfunding. Almost every guest at the wedding in the final season was a Kickstarter backer, and it was beyond cool to get everyone together.

Is there a queer film or filmmaker that you’re really excited about these days?
So many! I went to grad school with Steven Canals, and I am completely in love with his show, Pose. I’m also really enamored of Ryan O’Connell’s series, Special, which got renewed for a second season on Netflix. James Bland’s Giants and Jen Richards’ Her Story are both incredible, pioneering indie shows that everyone should be watching, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Do you have ideas if you were to return to the world of Eastsiders?
Honestly, I have a killer idea for an Eastsiders movie. I would love to get the gang back together at some point—just not as a series. Well, maybe in 10 years or something. Who knows?
What are you working on now?
I have a couple of projects in development that I’ll hopefully be able to talk about soon, but in the meantime I’ve been building a really cool community on my Patreon where my backers can read my scripts on my private feed and become a part of my work.
