Supportive Dad Dwyane Wade Refers to Child With She/Them Pronouns

Basketball star Dwyane Wade has been showing himself to be not only a winner on the court but also in the field of parenting by backing his 12-year-old child Zion. Wade showed up to be by their side during this year’s Pride celebration in Miami and shot down hateful bullies after the athlete posted a family photo to Instagram in which Zion was sporting long fake nails.

Now Wade has once again stepped up to speak his child’s praises and model what a good parent looks like to those who might still be struggling to accept their kids.

“They’re born a certain way and you say they gotta be that way. That’s not life, man,” Wade said during an appearance on Showtime’s All the Smoke podcast.

“I watched my son from day one come into who she now eventually has come into. And for me, it’s all about, nothing changes with my love. Nothing changes with my responsibilities. So the only thing I got to do now is become smarter and educate myself more.”

“He wasn’t on the boy vibe that Zaire was on,” Wade said of Zion as a young child.

“I had to look myself in the mirror and say, ’What if your son comes home and tell you he’s gay?’ What are you gonna do? How are you gonna be? How are you gonna act? It ain’t about him. He knows who he is. It’s about you. Who are you?”
