Trans Woman Yahira Nesby Murdered in Brooklyn

Transgender woman Yahira Nesby was shot to death in Brooklyn, N.Y., Thursday, making her at least the 21st known transgender homicide victim in the U.S. this year.

Police were called to a building in the East Flatbush neighborhood about 4:30 p.m., Brooklyn’s News 12 reports. Nesby had been shot in the chest and leg, and she was dead when police arrived.

Police then arrested a man who had injured his foot when he jumped from a second-floor window, and they believe he was the perpetrator. He has been hospitalized, and charges are pending. His name has not been released.

Posts on social media identified Nesby as a trans woman. News 12 spelled her first name as Yahhira, but other sources used Yahira, including what appears to be Nesby’s personal Facebook page.

All but two of the trans Americans known to have been murdered this year are Black women.

Constant reports of violence against our community are difficult to read, especially as we continue to face historic rates.
